Head of AU mission leaves Cairo Friday

The chief of African Union mission dispatched to observe the presidential elections in Egypt Mohamed al-Ameen, left Cairo on Friday morning after a visit that lasted for one week.

The presidential elections in Egypt were conducted in a calm, stable and orderly atmosphere, Ameen said in a press conference Thursday evening. He added the electoral process went smoothly, reflected the Egyptian citizen's will without pressure, and were conducted in a way consistent with the standards of the African Union.

The AU delegation has not monitored violations that might prejudice the results of the elections, Ameen mentioned. The delegation feels good toward the atmosphere of the elections and the firm will of the Egyptian government to complete the democratic process with neutrality and impartiality and to provide a secure environment for the political process, Ameen added.

The AU mission included 40 observers who were divided over 16 governorates and would issue a preliminary statement on the presidential elections in Egypt on Tuesday next.

Unofficial results of the presidential elections showed that former Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has garnered almost 97 percent of the votes.
