The Italian Attorney General Giuseppe Buitoni told il Giornale daily newspaper Tuesday that the handover of Giuilio Regeni's phone call history was a positive step by Egypt, pointing out that the Egyptian authorities need to continue investigations to reach the truth of the PhD student's murder.
Buitoni added that Russian and Scottish experts have examined Regeni's personal computer in an attempt to reveal details about his final days.
Photos were found on Regeni's computer of him with unidentified people, some of whom were later identified. Italy has called on Egyptian authorities to interrogate the identified people, Buitoni told il Giornale.
"I do not know if it is possible to reach the truth about [Regeni's] death or not, but what must be clear is that the investigations are carried out by the Egyptian authorities and police," Italian news agency ANSA quoted Buitoni as saying Tuesday.
Buitoni said Italy is cooperating as much as possible with Egyptian authorities regarding investigations.
The Italian prosecution refused the official scenario presented by the Egyptian authorities, which stated that Regeni was killed by a gang that were murdered by the Egyptian police later, Buitoni added.
A delegation of Italian investigators arrived in Cairo this week to resume meetings with Egyptian security officials over Regeni's killing, following the failure of an earlier meeting in Rome, which led to the summoning of the Italian ambassador from Cairo last month.
Buitoni will meet with the delegation, who are still in Cairo, once they return to Rome, ANSA reported.
Egypt handed over a copy of Regeni's phone call history to the Italian delegation, along with the testimony of witnesses during interrogations, according to ANSA.
ANSA said Egypt has repeatedly denied that Egyptian police were behind the torture and killing of Regeni.
