Hamdeen Sabbahi submits candidacy papers Friday

Presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabbahi submitted his candidacy papers to the Presidential Elections Commission on Friday amid a massive rally of supporters.

Sabbahi headed from his campaign headquarters in Mohandiseen to the commission's headquarters, where his supporters were waiting for him.

The rallying people chanted “President Sabbahi, on behalf of the revolution and due to [his] struggle," and "Oh Abdel Nasser, you legend, Sabbahi is an original copy of you."

Sabbahi’s supporters carried him on their shoulders from the vehicle to the gate of the commission. Sabbahi was accompanied by a number of public figures such as Abdel Hakim Gamal Abdel Nasser, son of former President Gamal Abdel Nasser, TV personality Hamdy Qandeil, director Khaled Youssef, producer Medhat al-Adl, labor activist Kamal Abu Eita, poet Sayed Hegab, and coordinator of the Kefaya movement Mohamed al-Ashqar.

MENA reported Sabbahi submitted more than 46,000 signatures.

Youssef said that he believed Sabbahi was the sole honest candidate and that his platform is concerned with the poor and aims to eliminate unemployment.

Qandeil said he supported Sabbahi for his pre-revolution stances and history of struggling against the former regime, adding that all revolutionary candidates including Sabbahi, Abul Ezz al-Hariry, Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh, Khaled Ali, and Hesham al-Bastawisi shouldadopt one platform.
