More than 500,000 Egyptian expats tried to register to vote in upcoming parliamentary elections in the first hours of Thursday.
However, many have faced technical complications in registering on the High Elections Committee’s website, and at embassies and consulates in various countries.
“The large turnout reflects their keenness to participate in shaping the country’s future,” said Prime Minister Essam Sharaf, adding that he called on the committee to resolve the technical problems quickly.
“Registration is just by the ID number, and they have until 19 November,” explained committee president Abdel Moez Ibrahim, adding that all those who have ID numbers issued before 27 September have the right to register.
Ashraf Abdel Wahab of the Ministry of Administrative Development, for his part, called on expats to try and register at a later time so as to avoid congestion of the site.
