The health ministry Sunday announced two more fatalities resulting from the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, bringing Egypt’s total H1N1 death toll up to 86.
The first case was that of a 35-year-old pregnant woman from the Nile Delta province of Gharbiya who had been suffering from respiratory ailments. The second was that of a 1-year-old girl from Daqahlia, also in the delta, who had suffered from both epilepsy and chronic pneumonia.
Meanwhile, 21 more confirmed infections have been reported in different provinces throughout the delta, with 24 more people being isolated after showing symptoms of the virus. Eleven more schools have been temporarily closed.
Elsewhere in the region, 105 H1N1 deaths have been reported in Saudi Arabia and 13 in the Palestinian Gaza Strip. What’s more, India’s minister of state for internal affairs was said to have contracted the virus, reportedly causing panic among officials in New Delhi.
On a related note, a veterinarian expert has warned of keeping pet cats and dogs at home, since infections among these animals have been reported in China and France amid fears that they could transmit the virus to humans.
