Grand sheikh of Al-Azhar donates income to state

Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb has transferred the income he earned since assuming his position to the State Treasury to support the Egyptian economy, according to the Ministry of Finance.

A statement released by the ministry on Wednesday said that al-Tayyeb sent a check for LE37,647, his total income since his appointment began in March 2010.

Al-Tayyeb's legal adviser said the grand sheikh has not received any bonuses or allowances since he assumed the position.

Al-Tayyeb said he has asked the finance minister to stop issuing paychecks for him because he does not want to receive any money for his service to Al-Azhar and the call to Islam.
