Graffiti artists restore paintings in downtown Cairo

A number of activists and graffiti artists painted new graffiti on the wall surrounding the American University in Cairo on Mohamed Mahmoud Street after some images had been removed on Monday.

Eyewitnesses said a bearded man attempted to erase part of an image depicting a bearded man in a suit carrying the Muslim Brotherhood’s logo, above which, “We are pleased to introduce the Brotherhood’s candidate!” was written, but was stopped.

Another painting depicted a spare tire, perhaps in a reference to Mohamed Morsy, the Brotherhood’s “reserve” candidate who was fielded by the Brotherhood after Khairat al-Shater was disqualified from the race by the Presidential Elections Commission.

Ahmed Salah, one of the painters, said, “Yesterday we decided to restore the paintings they erased. We took it as a challenge and began work on Tuesday so that people would find the paintings on the wall on Wednesday morning.”

He added that the graffiti is important as it shows that there are people who want the country to advance as others drag it backwards.
