The Ministry of Electricity said on Sunday that the government plans to increase prices of high electricity consumption brackets by 10-15 percent, adding that this is up to Cabinet to decide without affecting low-income social classes.
Minister Mohamed Shaker said prices have not been raised since January 2013. “We will review any complaints about the bills,” he said.
The Ministry of Electricity suffers an unprecedented financial crisis due to a low collection rate of bills, an increase in prices of fuel and spare parts for power plants, and a high cost of production.
The National Electricity Control Center detected an increase in loads that lasted for about four hours, which prompted the ministry to consider the launching of a media campaign to rationalize consumption in the summer instead of cutting the power.
