Govt announces official Ramadan food prices

The government on Thursday announced new prices for food commodities to be sold during Ramadan at state-subsidized supply outlets.

According to officials, outlets will be supplied with extra quantities of foodstuffs to offset the high food consumption traditionally associated with the Islamic holy month.

Ahmed el-Rakaybi, president of the state-run Holding Company for Foodstuffs, said that outlets had been supplied with 47,000 tons of sugar and 3500 tons of rice.

Sugar, say officials, will be sold for LE3.75 per kilo; rice for LE3.25 per kilo; flour for LE2.50 per kilo; cooking oil for LE5.60 per kilo; beans for LE3.25 per kilo; and lentils for LE8.50 per kilo.

Meat prices, meanwhile, will range between LE23 and LE38 per kilo, and fish between LE6.5 and LE13.75 per kilo.
