Egypt's Ministry of Finance has finished the necessary groundwork for restructuring wages and raising the minimum wage of state employees, sources said.
The ministry will submit its plan to the interim cabinet on Wednesday during its weekly meeting. Sources expect the cabinet to approve raising the minimum wage to LE1200 over five years.
A senior ministry official said the wage project will be introduced for public discussion after it receives the cabinet's approval and before it is issued as a law by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.
The same official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said ministers have not yet given their final approval to the plan, adding that there are several ways to increase the minimum wage.
He said that if the minimum state employee wage was raised to LE1200, salaries will be financed by the state budget and not through foreign loans or assistance.
