Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawy met with a group of ministers and governors on Sunday to tackle developments of the Golden Triangle project for mineral wealth in Upper Egypt.
The meeting was attended by ministers of transportation, trade and industry, planning, local development, housing, petroleum as well as governors of Red Sea, Qena and Sohag.
The group decided the project will be proposed to a consulting firm in March so a comprehensive plan can be drawn to develop the Golden Triangle area. The plan should include activities of extraction, manufacturing and trade of metals as well as roads, ports and urban and tourist development.
Hani Salah, cabinet spokesperson, said the Golden Triangle ‘Qena-Safaga-Qoseir’ targets establishing new industrial area as well as tourist, mining, trade and industrial center that represent a major development in Upper Egypt. The project will be carried out between Qena and Red Sea, with the head at Qena and the base at Safaga and Qoseir. An independent authority, affiliated to cabinet, will carry out the project.
Proposed projects for developing the triangle area includes using raw phosphate, establishing fertilizers factories, using raw materials to manufacture cement, using gold raw materials, using agricultural lands in Qena, establishing several tourist resorts and developing others between Safaga and Qoseir.
The project also include establishing urban communities like New Qena and other new cities on Qaft al-Qoseir road, developing Safaga and Qoseir, carrying out industrial projects that develop industrial areas in Qena, Sohag and Red Sea.
On 3 November, al-Beblawy ordered the formation of a ministerial committee to follow up on the Golden Triangle project.
