Deputy Prime Minister Ali al-Selmy has failed to convince representatives of 57 political groups to call off a demonstration slated for next Friday under the slogan “For the Love of Egypt”.
In his meeting with representatives of political parties, movements, coalitions, Sufis and Coptic Christians on Monday, Selmy confirmed that Egypt would remain a civil and democratic state.
The political groups, for their part, called for the restructuring of police forces in order help restore order. They also called for making the judiciary, media and Al-Azhar independent, abolishing military tribunals, and banning former ruling party members from participating in politics for an entire parliamentary session.
While the Sufis said they would take part in Friday’s demonstration, the Muslim Brotherhood called it a farce and criticized the Sufis, the liberals and the leftists for agreeing to participate.
The group also called on the other groups present to give the government and the military council a chance to meet the revolution’s demands.
Representatives of the Egyptian Trend Party and the Coalition of Revolutionary Youth said they would not take part in the demonstration.
