The governor of Giza has spoken in defense of the construction of a giant concrete wall around the Israeli Embassy, aimed at protecting it from assault by demonstrators.
“The wall is not to protect the embassy,” said Giza Governor Ali Abdel Rahman. “It is to protect residents living in the same building from demonstrators.”
A diplomatic source denied that the embassy would be moved to another place that could be better secured.
The governor's comments came in response to comments from some Egyptians condemning the wall. One young man painted a grafitti message on the wall reading "The People Want to Topple the Wall," a message that was well-received by passersby.
In related news, a government official said that Israel has not yet officially accepted Egypt’s request to hold a joint investigation into the killing of Egyptian soldiers by the Israeli army on the border last month.
