Giorgio Armani, global fashion icon, dies at 91

The world’s most famous Italian fashion designer, Giorgio Armani, has passed away at the age of 91, after a life spent in the world of fashion where he rose to fame for his style and elegance, especially among global celebrities and major stars.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni mourned the passing of Giorgio Armani, noting that Italy has lost one of its icons—a man who made fashion one of the country’s sources of soft power since the 1970s. In an official statement, she said: “Today we lost him with great sadness, but his contributions to building Italy’s image on the world map will remain and be influential.”

Those close to him say the secret to his success was his love and dedication to his work. He began his career from a small clothing store until he became the owner of one of the world’s largest fashion and clothing empires, the “Armani Group,” which is valued at billions of dollars. The first branch of the group outside of Italy was established in the United States in 1970, marking the beginning of his global launch.

Giorgio Armani had been suffering from health problems that, for the first time in his career, prevented him from participating in the Milan International Fashion Festival last June, and his absence was notable.

Who was fashion designer Giorgio Armani?

Born on July 11, 1934, in a poor suburb of Milan, Giorgio Armani’s empire is now valued at around $10 billion. He was one of the world’s top 200 billionaires after 50 years of dedicated work to expand his fashion and style empire.

Armani’s childhood dream was to become a doctor. He worked in a clothing and tailoring shop in Milan to make a living in his youth. It was there that he fell in love with fashion, launching his career. He later moved to Hollywood, designing clothes for celebrities in the 1970s and earning their admiration with his distinctive creations. This was the start of his journey to build his fashion empire.

American actor Richard Gere was a huge fan and, along with other Hollywood stars like Sophia Loren, Brad Pitt, and George Clooney, helped expand Armani’s fame. They all admitted that his unique designs were a key reason for their popularity with the public and willingly participated in his advertising campaigns.

In 2000, Armani was honored with a special wing at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. He was the only fashion designer to have a wing dedicated to him in a global museum a quarter of a century before his death.
