The German Foreign Ministry on Tuesday summoned the Egyptian ambassador to protest what it called “mass executions” issued on Monday against members of the Muslim Brotherhood and urged the Egyptian government to provide a fair trial for the accused.
“It is a laughingstock,” said Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. “The Egyptian authorities risk more instability and consolidate political and social divisions before the May presidential elections.”
A court sent on Monday the case documents of 682 Muslim Brotherhood supporters, including Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, to the Grand Mufti in preparation for their execution.
They were convicted on charges of inciting violence after the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsy in July in response to mass protests against his rule.
