A team of German doctors is expected to arrive to the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh to check on the health of former President Hosni Mubarak, following reports that he might have cancer, medical and judicial sources announced.
The team includes the doctor who conducted surgery on Mubarak last year in Germany, the sources added. Describing the move as “lawful,” they said the team’s principal mission is to decide whether Mubarak is suffering from cancer as recently claimed by his lawyer Farid al-Deeb.
Assistant Minister of Health, Abdel Hamid Abaza, said the ministry does not have any scientific proof that Mubarak has cancer.
Standing outside an emergency unit at Mounira Hospital, Abaza said that the medical commission sent by the attorney general to check on Mubarak might have discovered Mubarak’s disease. The nature of Mubarak surgery in Germany last year was unknown to the public.
Abaza stressed that Mubarak’s alleged cancer infection remains unconfirmed, and added that he has no information about Deeb’s statements.
Deeb had requested Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud to summon Mubarak’s medical team to check on him in Sharm el-Sheikh.
Mubarak has been detained at a Sharm el-Sheikh hospital since April. He faces charges of power abuse, financial corruption, and murdering protesters during the 25 January revolution, which ended his 30-year rule in February.
