Al-Ahly football club seems increasingly interested in naming former Cameroon coach Winfred Schaefer its new team manager, analysts say.
The resignation of former manager Hossam al-Badri in November spurred speculation over who would fill the vacancy. Former player Abdel Aziz Abdel Shafy is currently in charge of the club until a new coach is selected.
Former Zambia coach, Frenchmen Hervey Renard was on the list of nominees before signing for al-Masry, another Egyptian team, strengthening the German Schaefer's chances.
Al-Ahly is expected to declare the name of the new coach within the next few days. The team is set for an important encounter with Haras al-Hodoud (The Frontier Guards), before taking on Zamalek, al-Ahly's chief competitor, in a 30 December match.
Al-Ahly is Egypt's most popular football club. The team has secured the premiere league championship each of the past six years.
