German passenger plane makes emergency landing at Cairo airport

Cairo International Airport on Wednesday announced a brief "state of emergency" when a German passenger plane made an unscheduled landing after smoke was detected in the plane's cockpit.

The pilot of Lufthansa flight 586 en route from Munich requested that the airport prepare to receive an emergency landing, after which he was given priority to land on a special runway, where ambulances and fire engines were standing by.

The pilot managed to land the plane, bearing 78 passengers, without incident. The plane was subsequently inspected by a technical team.

It later emerged that the smoke had been caused by a short circuit.
