The German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, inaugurated the new headquarters of the German University in Cairo (GUC) in the New Administrative Capital on Thursday, during his first visit to the university since its founding. This visit took place during his official trip to Egypt, where he met with a group of students in a festive atmosphere.
Both the GUC and the German International University (GIU) expressed their pride in the German President’s visit and the inauguration of the “Gate of Hope,” which symbolizes cross-border education and embodies the principles of openness and a global culture of peace. They highlighted that education and science are the foundations of a more just,peaceful, and interconnected world, and that this gate is a miniature replica of the main entrance to the largest cross-border German university in the world.
The statement expressed pride in the German President’s remarks during the joint press conference with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, where he emphasized his intention to sign a higher education agreement. This agreement is seen as a sign of the strong cooperation between Egypt and Germany. The President stressed the importance of expanding and strengthening higher education and vocational training in both countries.
The German President is on an official visit to Egypt, accompanied by a large delegation including heads of major German companies. This marks the first visit by a German president to Egypt in 25 years.
GIU is a German institution aimed at strengthening the German higher education system in Egypt, the Middle East, Africa, and globally. It seeks to make German higher education accessible and to foster innovation in industry and the economy in the region. This is achieved through strengthening partnerships between Germany and its partners worldwide, utilizing the latest teaching methods, advanced curricula, and modern technology.
The GIU comprises 7 faculties and 48 programs. These include the Faculty of Engineering, offering specializations such as mechatronics/automotive engineering, robotics and automation, control and mechanical engineering, and power and electrical systems engineering. Additionally, there’s the Faculty of Architecture, encompassing architectural design engineering and interior architecture. The Faculty of Information Technology and Computer Science covers data science,software engineering, information and data security, and information technology. The Faculty of Design offers fashion and jewelry design, and industrial design.
Other faculties include Business Administration, offering specializations such as international management, digital marketing, finance and banking, accounting, logistics, real estate, tourism and hospitality, and small and medium enterprises and entrepreneurship. There are also faculties for pharmaceutical engineering, physiotherapy, and biotechnology.
