Gaza-bound aid ship reaches Egyptian port

An African Gaza-bound aid ship sailing from South Africa arrived on Thursday morning at a port in Arish.

The Navy Star set sail from South Africa and arrived in Egypt via Port Sudan, carrying nearly 39 tonnes of supplies, according to Arish Port Chief Gamal Abdel Maqsoud.

The ship will also dock at Sidon Port in Lebanon to provide aid to Palestinian refugee camps there, Abdel Maqsoud added.

Israeli naval forces usually block aid convoys heading to Gaza by sea, leading some convoys to attempt to enter via the Egyptian Rafah border crossing.

In late July, Israeli naval forces detained a French aid ship, enforcing a blockade in place since Hamas took control over the strip in 2007.
