A senior Petroleum Ministry official has said that the increased gas exports to Jordan last weekend did not affect the local supply of gas for power stations and had nothing to do with blackouts in seven governorates on Thursday.
The amount of gase exported to Jordan is low compared to Egypt's daily production, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Egypt exports an average of 200 million cubic feet of gas per day, which represents only slightly more than 3 percent of the total production of 6 billion cubic feet per day.
Exports of natural gas and derivatives increased in the first nine months of this year by 7.54 percent to US$1.4 billion, up from US$1.3 billion during the same period of 2011, according to the Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Center.
The country has suffered from periodic blackouts that prompted protests in several governorates over the summer.
