Minister of social solidarity Ali al-Meselhi said on Sunday that LE20 million was disbursed to NGOs across Egypt over the past three months.
The funds provide for services conducted by NGOs including career counseling and care of orphans, elders and the physically-challenged, the minister told reporters, adding that the primary recipients were NGOs working in field of development.
Unregistered NGOs supporting democracy complain of a government crackdown. Media reports said in March the ministry of social solidarity is working on an NGO act that is described by rights groups as allowing authorities to intervene in their work and prevent them from defending human rights as well as civil society supervision over Egypt's parliamentary and presidential elections.
