Fuel crisis continues, despite state TV report of Cairo letup

State TV has reported that the fuel crisis, which has prompted the death of one person and scuffles that left several people hurt, has subsided in Cairo since Thursday.

But in other governorates, people clashed with employees at gas stations refusing to sell gas, as well as with taxi drivers who raised fares due to the gas shortage.

The official page of the Interior Ministry on Facebook has said that the police have reported 100 cases of gas cylinders being sold on the black market and 47 cases of price gouging.

In Alexandria, police stopped a van carrying more than 400 butane gas cylinders intended to be sold on the black market.

In Daqahlia, seven gas stations were reported to police as illegally refusing to sell gas.

The rush for fuel was sparked by a fear that market prices, which have remained low thanks to government subsidies, would rise.
