The Freedom and Justice Party, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, has rescinded its demand on Wednesday to form the new government if it receives a majority in parliament. On Thursday, it said that talk of the next government was “premature.”
What is important now is cooperation among all parties and getting the country through the transition period, the statement said.
“We’re totally committed to cooperation with all parties in the Democratic Coalition, and no contacts have been made with the political forces involved in the electoral process concerning the matter,” it said.
Mohamed Morsi, head of the Freedom and Justice Party, stressed in a press conference on Tuesday that “the parliament majority will form the new government.”
The legal councilor to the party, Ahmed Abu Baraka, reiterated Morsi’s statements, saying Wednesday that “the parliament majority in the People’s Assembly has the right to form the new government.”
The liberal Wafd Party and the Salafi Nour Party and Jama'a al-Islamiya criticized the Muslim Brotherhood’s statements.
Essam Abdel Majid, head of the media office for the Jama'a al-Islamiya, said that the government must be formed through a coalition of all trends and parties: liberal, leftist and Coptic.
