Police said 40 suspects arrested during the clashes that broke out on Sunday at the Alexandria Criminal Court have been referred to the Public Prosecution.
Nasser al-Abd, Alexandria investigations chief, said 31 people are charged with destroying and burning two police cars, injuring two conscripts and hurling stones at security. The remaining nine were arrested on charges of storming the courtroom.
A Public Prosecution team visited the scene of the clashes and inspected the offices that were raided, while an engineering committee was assigned to examine the safety of the courtroom and the Justice Ministry hired a team of forensic experts to examine burned courtroom files.
The clashes broke out on Sunday during the trial of officers charged with killing protesters during the 25 January revolution. The court reviewing the case declined to issue a verdict as clashes broke out both inside and outside the courtroom.
Relatives of the victims and activists complained about the lack of a verdict in the case, two years after the revolution.
Footage by Reuters showed an armored police vehicle almost running over a protester, bringing to mind similar images during the revolution.
The clashes camea few days ahead of mass rallies expected to be held on Friday 25 January, in commemoration of the revolution.
