Former Zamalek, Egypt star Taha Besry dies at 68

Former Zamalek SC and Egypt footballer Taha Besry passed away early Wednesday at 68.

Besry’s health deteriorated before dying at the Maadi Military Hospital in Cairo.

Besry, who was born in 1946, was part of some of Zamalek’s local league and cup victories. He was a member of Egypt’s squad for the African Cup in 1970, 1974 and 1976, during which he contributed with four goals.

He was named Egypt’s best footballer during the 1977-1978, his last on pitch.

Besry moved to coaching after retirement as a player, leading Zamalek, Ghazl al-Mahalla, Arab Contractors and Petrojet.

Besry led ENPPI's debut in the top tier league in 2003, remarkable for denying the title for Egypt's top team, al-Ahly, with a last-match, 1-0 defeat that diverted the title to Zamalek. Under Besry, ENPPI also won the Egypt Cup for 2004-2005.
