Former Yemeni President Ali Nasser Mohamed arrived in Cairo on Thursday morning, coming from Turkey in a visit to Egypt set to last for a few days.
Mohamed came to meet with several Yemeni leaders living in Egypt.
Mohamed’s planned meetings come within the framework of consultations between a number of former Yemeni leaders in several Arab and European countries. The leaders aim at forming a moderate political council to lead Yemen in a potential transitional period if Saleh resigns, said informed sources that received Mohamed at Cairo International Airport.
The former Yemeni leaders are dedicated to conducting these consultations confidentially, said the same sources, adding that the leaders will take more active moves in the coming days, considering that the UN Security Council is expected to issue a statement soon condemning violence against Yemeni demonstrators.
Demonstrations began in Yemen in February, calling for an end to the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who has been ruling Yemen for 33 years.
The Yemeni government accused Mohamed last September of transferring funds to Yemeni demonstrators in order to overthrow Saleh. Mohamed’s aid was considered an "act of sabotage" by Yemeni authorities.
Mohamed is one of the most prominent figures who worked to reconcile north and south Yemen in the 1980s before the declaration of unity on 22 May 1990.
