Former radio and TV union chief acquitted of corruption charges

Cairo Criminal Court on Thursday exonerated Osama al-Sheikh, the former head of the Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU) of charges he squandered union funds.

Sheikh was accused of selling the broadcast rights of some TV series to private channels at preferential rates.

Upon hearing the verdict, Sheikh's reatlives cheered and approached the defendant to congratulate him.

A panel of Cinema Institute professors and other experts defended Sheikh, saying there was no evidence against him and that he had helped the union and its subordinate companies profit.
