Former prime minister’s trial adjourned

South Cairo Criminal Court on Thursday decided to adjourn the trial of former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, who is charged with making LE59 million in illicit gains by exploiting his power, state-owned Akhbar Al-Youm newspaper has said.

The court adjourned the trial to 12 May to finish hearing witnesses’ testimonies.

Al-Masry Al-Youm said the judge prevented journalists from attending the second session of the trial when he heard noise coming from the corner where they were sitting, but the journalists said he banned them in accordance with an earlier gag order decision.

Nazif’s alleged illicit gains include a plot of land, an apartment in the San Stefano Towers in Alexandria and a charity he claims he did not profit from. He is also accused of accepting gifts from state-owned newspapers.

He had resigned with the outbreak of the 25 January revolution that forced President Hosni Mubarak to step down.
