Former presidential chief of staff released on bail

An Egyptian court on Tuesday released former presidential chief of staff Zakariya Azmy on a bail of LE200,000 pending investigations into allegations of illegal acquisition of wealth.

Nasr City Court of Appeals released Azmy pending investigations after the Illicit Gains Authority (IGA) renewed Azmy's 15-day detention three times – the maximum possible number of times stipulated in the law, judicial sources have said.

The IGA, which is affiliated with the Justice Ministry, could not renew his detention further, so Azmy was referred to the court that ordered his release.

Azmy appeared in court at 8:30 pm on Tuesday amid tight security.

Security forces erected iron barricades around the court before Azmy entered and barred reporters from entering the hearing.
