Former president is in a stable condition, says health minister

The toppled President Hosni Mubarak is in stable health, the Egyptian Health Ministry Ashraf Hatem said on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters, Hatem denied that a German medical team was treating Mubarak in Sharm el-Sheikh, saying, “Such a procedure cannot take place without the prosecutor’s agreement and the ministry being notified.”

Regarding Mubarak’s transfer from Sharm el-Sheikh, Hatem said that the matter was the responsibility of advisory committees affiliated with the prosecutor’s office.

The delayed trial of Mubarak, who is still undergoing treatment in Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital, has created widespread controversy in Egypt, where families of those killed and injured during Egypt’s recent uprising have staged protests to demand justice.

However, the minister’s announcement comes amid a media campaign launched by Mubarak’s defense lawyer Farid al-Deeb, who insists that his defendant is suffering from stomach cancer.

Mubarak’s trial was earlier adjourned to 3 August. The former president faces charges of corruption, squandering public funds and killing protesters during the January revolution, which led to the fall of his regime on 11 February.
