Gameel Saeed, a lawyer for Former Petroleum Minister Sameh Fahmy, challenged the verdict against his client at the Court of Cassation Saturday.
Fahmy was sentenced to 15 years in prison for charges related to Egypt's gas deal with Israel, including squandering public money, financial corruption, illegal profiteering and harming national interests.
The memorandum of appeal said that the court verdict included an error in applying the law due to contradicted accusations, nullifying the judgment.
The court also handed down several other prison sentences, including 10 years for former chairman of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company Mohamed Ibrahim Youssef, seven years for three former senior Petroleum Ministry officials and three years for another ministry official.
State-run news agency MENA reported that the court also imposed a total of US$2.3 billion in fines on the defendants.
