Former minister of agriculture detained in carcinogenic pesticides case

The prosecutor in charge of investigations into Ministry of Agriculture corruption cases on Tuesday ordered the detention of former Minister of Agriculture Youssef Wali for 15 days pending the results of an investigation. Wali was arrested on Monday.

Judge Ahmed Idris charged Wali and others with allowing the import of carcinogenic pesticides, which infected a large number of citizens after eating vegetables and fruits that had been sprayed with those pesticides.

Wali is also accused of allocating land lots for preferred businessmen in different parts of the country in violation of the law, thereby incurring losses of some LE200 million from the state budget; Wali has denied the accusation.
