Former head of judges club: Mubarak regime has lost legitimacy

The regime has lost its constitutional legitimacy since the 25 January protests, said Zakaria Abdel Aziz, former head of the Egyptian Judge’s Club, during a visit to protesters in Tahrir Square on Saturday.

He added that, if 20 Egyptian army officers caused Egypt’s royal regime to collapse in 1952, the ongoing uprising involving more than eight million Egyptians had no doubt brought down the Mubarak regime.

Abdel Aziz, a longtime advocate for judicial independence, called for the formation of a presidential committee mandated with running the affairs of the country in a transitional period during which a new constitution can be drawn up in the lead-up to fair presidential elections. Committee members would be prohibited from running in elections.
