An Egyptian judicial authority on Wednesday referred former Chief of Presidential Staff Zakariya Azmy for criminal trial on charges he abused his position for financial gain.
An Illicit Gains Authority (IGA) statement said investigations have shown that Azmy accumulated wealth beyond what he could have earned from his declared sources of income.
The head of the IGA, Assem al-Gohary, had ordered Azmy's assets frozen after reports suggested his wealth was suspiciously inflated.
The statement said Azmy has a large number of properties, plots of land and numerous bank accounts.
The IGA previously ordered Azmy's arrest pending investigations and extended his detention several times.
