Former army general accuses US of planning to invade, divide Egypt

The US is in the process of executing a master plan to divide Egypt into smaller countries, retired army general Hossam Sweilam told a public conference Friday.

Sweilam, a former army major general, accused the US of having a plan to invade Egypt in 2015. That plan, he said, begins with a blow to Egypt’s military institution by breeding disunity between citizens and the army.

The next step is the seizure and control of the Suez Canal, he said, by invasion of the Suez Canal cities of Port Said, Ismailia and Suez.

In statements published by Al-Ahram, Sweilam said the plan to divide the Middle East is part of a larger Zionist scheme. The US invasion of Iraq and the separation of South Sudan were part of that overall plan and will be followed by the division of Libya, Yemen and then Syria, he added.

In the past, Sweilam has routinely attacked revolutionary powers and accused them of treason and receiving funds from foreign countries, setting forth theories of instigation and intervention by malevolent foreign powers.

At the conference, Friday also spoke about political groups that he said are manipulating children and inciting them to attack police and army forces.

The popularity of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) has been eroded considerably after it came to power of a year ago following the resignation of former President Hosni Mubarak. In recent months, the ruling council has been accused of using brutal tactics used against protestors, and killing some. In November, images of clashes that showed army forces dragging protesters along the ground and beating a female protester in her bare chest circulated in the media.

Critics say the SCAF is part of ex-President Hosni Mubarak’s regime because its head, field Marshal Tantawi, was his defense minister for two decades.
