Foreign tourist arrivals drop, Arab arrivals rise at end of 2011

The number of foreign tourists visiting Egypt in December 2011 dropped 33 percent compared to the same month in 2010, from about 1.28 million to 855,000.

A monthly bulletin for the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics on Tuesday said arrivals from Western Europe were the lowest of the major tourist regions documented, followed by those from Eastern Europe.

Tourist spent a total of 9.7 million nights in Egypt in December 2011, down from 11.7 million in the same month the year before, a drop of 17.6 percent. The bulletin also said tourists from Western Europe spent the fewest number of nights in Egypt, followed by those from Eastern Europe and North America.

Meanwhile, the number of Arab tourists who came to Egypt rose by 2.8 percent, from 160,000 in 2010 to 165,000 in December 2011. The number of nights Arab tourists spent in Egypt in December 2011 was 33.2 percent higher than the total number of nights they spent in December 2010, which was 2 million.
