Foreign Ministry to form committee to compensate Egyptians in Libya

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry is seeking to form a government committee to follow up on Egyptians who have been affected by the Libyan revolution, which lasted nearly six months, the ministry said.

The Foreign Ministry has contacted various ministries and Egyptian institutions that have dealings with Libya, said Mohamed Qasim, Assistant Foreign Minister.

Qasim told reporters that the committee will protect the rights and interests of Egyptians in Libya and find a way to compensate them for losses incurred by the Libyan revolution.

He said the committee will also be responsible for compiling files to prove losses in individual cases.

The same measures were followed with Egyptians in Iraq after the US invasion in 2003.

Those affected can submit their profiles and documents to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Manpower or the Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade, Qasim said.

He stressed the committee will find ways to compensate families of Egyptians killed during the Libyan revolution, and added that the committee will seek help from the UN Sanctions Committee.

A substantial number of Egyptians, who formed the largest foreign community in Libya, returned home after the Libyan uprising. The number of Egyptians in Libya before the fighting began was estimated at about 2 million.

News reports quoted complaints of many Egyptian workers returning from Libya. According to the complaints, Qadhafi targeted Egyptians during the early days of the revolution.
