Foreign Ministry: Egypt concerned over situation in Gaza

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Badr Abdel Aaty has expressed Egypt’s concern over escalation of violence in Palestine, as Israel launches military operations against Gaza strip, ruled by Hamas, in response to missiles shot against Israel.

Abdel Aaty called on both sides to show self-restraint and to refrain from violence. He warned against complicating the situation, which would make a return to negotiations difficult.

In an official statement by the ministry, Abdel Aaty called on the two sides of Israel and Palestine to stick to the 2012 truce, urging immediate start on direct communications.

He stressed that the international society is responsible for escalation of violence due to be reluctant in reaching compromise for the Palestinian cause and urged that it should take serious steps to halt the military operations.

Palestinian factions called on Egyptian authorities, the Arab League and Organization of Islamic Conference to take immediate steps to halt Israeli ‘aggression’ on Gaza.

In a press release issued on Tuesday upon joint meeting for its representatives in Gaza, the factions called on Arab and Islamic peoples as well as all forces of peace to condemn the Israeli ‘aggression’ and called for pressuring Israel to stop attacks against Palestinians.
