Foreign Ministry asks EU to freeze assets of former Egyptian officials

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has asked the European Union to freeze the assets of several former Egyptian officials. These include: Ahmed Ezz, former organization secretary for the ruling National Democratic Party; Ahmed Nazif, former prime minister; Zuheir Garrana, former minister of tourism; Ahmed al-Maghraby, former minister of housing; Rachid Mohamed Rachid, former minister of trade and industry; and Anas al-Fiqy, former minister of information.

The move comes in accordance with the United Nations Convention against Corruption, to which Egypt is signatory.

Meanwhile, Public Funds Prosecutors are continuing to look into complaints against these officials. Prosecutors have already summoned al-Maghraby, whose lawyer, Mohamed Beibars, has said he would submit documents proving the former minister's innocence.

Lawyers for Garrana and former interior minister Habib al-Adly also said they had documents that would confirm that their respective clients were innocent of wrongdoing.

Prosecutors plan to summon the rest of the defendants once legal procedures are finalized.
