Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy welcomed the idea of holding a ministerial conference to start implementing the decisions of the Geneva 1 conference in regards to Syria. He added that Egypt is in full support of a political solution to the ongoing crisis.
In a statement issued by the ministry on Monday, Fahmy asked all Syrian parties to sit on the negotiating table and work toward a political solution in order to protect the Syrian people from more death and destruction.
He also called on regional and international parties to help Syrians reach a political settlement.
Fahmy also said that Egypt is working to facilitate a political solution in the lead up to the Geneva 2 convention, which is scheduled to begin on 22 January. He said a solution should ensure freedom and guarantee the rights of all Syrians so that they can contribute positively to their country.
He added that it is important for the Syrian government to show good faith by releasing political detainees and opposition figures. Also, he said the government must facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, especially in the winter months.
