Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr will visit China on Tuesday as part of an East Asia tour that includes Japan and South Korea, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson has said.
Spokesperson Amr Roshdy said Amr will head to Baghdad after the tour ends to attend the 2012 Arab League Summit at the end of the month.
The East Asia visit mainly aims at boosting Egypt’s economic and trade ties with such countries, especially because they are among Egypt’s top trading partners, Roshdy said.
The minister will meet with his Chinese counterpart, Yang Jiechi, to discuss increasing Chinese investments in Egypt and the Arab world, as well as the Syrian situation. Amr will also meet with Chinese Vice President Shi Jin, Roshdy said.
Amr also plans to meet with the Chinese media to discuss political developments in Egypt and other issues.
During a three-day visit to Tokyo that will start on Thursday, Amr will hold talks with senior Japanese officials, including the parliamentary speaker, foreign minister, trade ministry officials and members of the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology Board of Trustees.
The minister will also meet with heads of major Japanese companies to review investment opportunities in Egypt. He will also visit Fukushima, a city struck by a tsunami last March that caused a massive nuclear meltdown.
Roshdy said Amr will wrap up his visit by attending the Nuclear Security Summit in South Korea on 27 March. Representatives of 53 countries, the United Nations secretary general, the heads of the European Council and the European Commission and the International Atomic Energy Agency chief will also attend.
International cooperation to boost nuclear security will be on top of the summit’s agenda.
