Foreign minister calls for a solution to Sudan’s Abyei crisis

Foreign Minister Nabil al-Araby on Tuesday called for a solution to the violent dispute over the Abyei region, located on the border between north and south Sudan.

Following a meeting with the US Special Envoy to Sudan Princeton Lyman, Araby said in a statement that the solution should take into account the various tribes living along the border.

Araby also highlighted the importance of the next phase of negotiations on problems between the two sides.

The statement said that Araby and Lyman reviewed recent developments in the Sudanese situation. They also tackled relations between the north and south, as well as efforts made to achieve a final and comprehensive solution to the Darfur issue.

Araby, according to the statement, confirmed the importance of international efforts to encourage the two sides to hold talks apart from any conflict that might negatively affect their relations in the future.

He also said that Egypt would boost its political and economic ties with both the north and south of Sudan, which would support stability and economic development for both northerners and southerners.
