Football association mulls canceling 2011 Egypt Cup

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) is considering the cancellation of this year's Egypt Cup, the country's oldest soccer competition, citing "time constraints."

Egypt's National Sports Council had frozen all sporting activities for a six-week period in light of the wave of nationwide protests that ultimately led to the resignation of now-former president Hosni Mubarak.

In late January, the EFA suspended all scheduled football competitions.

The head of the association's competitions committee, Amer Hussein, told reporters that unfolding developments in Egypt had forced officials to halt all soccer matches, which, he said, would extend the season and make it difficult to complete all scheduled Egypt Cup matches.

Hussein noted that Egypt's premiere football league had originally planned to play its last match on 23 May, but that league matches would conclude later than this due to current events.
