The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced that after conducting additional tests on Mohamed Salah and communicating between the national team’s medical staff and Liverpool FC, it was decided that Salah will return to England to complete his treatment following the Cape Verde match on Monday.
Salah suffered a strain in the posterior muscle, forcing him to miss the national team’s two matches in the African Cup of Nations against Cape Verde, and then the round of 16 match in the event of qualification to the knockout stage.
The EFA added in a Monday statement: “This comes in the hope of (Salah) joining the national team in the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations if they qualify.”
German Jurgen Klopp, coach of Liverpool FC, called on EFA to return Salah from the African Cup of Nations to undergo treatment for his muscle injury.
Salah will miss Egypt’s final group match against Cape Verde, and will likely not be ready until the quarter-finals at the earliest after his exit during the 2-2 draw with Ghana on Thursday.
Klopp said it “makes sense” for Salah to return to Liverpool FC to receive treatment, adding that he would be happy to have the Egyptian striker return to the Africa Cup of Nations “if he is fit before the final.”
“This is the plan,” Klopp said after Liverpool’s 4-0 win away to Bournemouth.
“I think everyone will probably see that it makes sense for him to rehabilitate with us or with our technical and medical staff.”
Klopp added that Liverpool’s medical staff is in contact with Salah, and expects the player to return from Ivory Coast.
The 31-year-old was substituted in the first half of Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana in the African Cup of Nations on Thursday evening, and after undergoing medical evaluation, it was decided that he would miss the next two matches.
