FM voices keenness on boosting cooperation with Algeria

CAIRO, Jan 26 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty affirmed Egypt’s pride in the depth of the relations and historic ties that bind Egypt and Algeria, as well as the shared keenness to continue building on the current positive momentum and to enhance bilateral cooperation in various political, economic, trade, and investment fields in a manner that serves the common interests of the two brotherly peoples.

This came during a meeting between Abdelatty and Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, on the sidelines of their presence in Tunisia.

Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the meeting addressed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries.

Minister Abdelatty praised the notable development witnessed in relations of cooperation and coordination between the two countries, stressing the importance of continuing consultation and coordination on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The meeting also tackled developments in regional issues, particularly the latest situation in the Gaza Strip and U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative to launch the Peace Board.

Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s welcome of this initiative, emphasizing the importance of moving forward with the implementation of the requirements of the second phase of the U.S. President’s plan, supporting the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, and deploying an international stabilization force to monitor the ceasefire.

This, he noted, would pave the way for early recovery and reconstruction, while ensuring the continued, unhindered flow of humanitarian aid into the Strip.

Regarding the situation in Libya, the two ministers exchanged views on recent developments in the Libyan scene. Minister Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for the political settlement track in a manner that preserves Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and ensures that the political process remains exclusively Libyan-owned.

He also stressed the need to create the appropriate conditions to hold electoral entitlements simultaneously, end the state of division, and reject any foreign interventions that hinder reaching a sustainable solution.

In this context, the two ministers underscored the importance of the trilateral consultation mechanism among the foreign ministers of Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria as a pivotal framework for coordinating positions and intensifying the efforts of neighboring countries in support of stability in Libya.

The two ministers also addressed developments in Sudan, where Abdelatty emphasized the importance of reaching a humanitarian truce and establishing safe humanitarian shelters and corridors as a prelude to a comprehensive ceasefire.

He also stressed the importance of launching an inclusive, Sudanese-owned political process, reaffirming Egypt’s firm position on the necessity of respecting Sudan’s sovereignty, preserving its unity and territorial integrity, and supporting its national institutions. (MENA)
