Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr on Tuesday emphasized the need to resolve the Syrian crisis quickly to protect civilian lives, during a phone conversation with his Chinese counterpart, Yang Jiechi.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Amr Roshdy said the minister will visit Beijing on 21 March to hold talks with Chinese officials regarding cooperation between the two countries to serve their development goals.
Roshdy added that Amr’s conversation with his Chinese counterpart tackled the uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, as well as several bilateral issues.
On Tuesday, students staged protests in front of the Chinese and Russian embassies to condemn the two countries' support for Assad's regime. China and Russia have used their veto power to block a UN Security Council resolution against the Syrian president.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry also issued a statement Wednesday about another phone call between Yang and Arab League Chief Nabil al-Araby and several of his Arab counterparts on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Syria.
Yang emphasized China has exerted efforts to preserve peace and stability in Syria and the Middle East. He said there is an urgent need to stop the ongoing violence in Syria and start a comprehensive political dialogue about reform plans as soon as possible, according to the statement.
