Foreign Minister Sameh Soukry has called on Israel to cease any measures aimed at changing the Arab, Islamic and Christian identity of Al Quds city.
During a meeting with Secretary-General of Fatah’s Central Committee Jibril Rajoub in Cairo, Soukry warned of attempts to change the historical and legal status quo in Palestine, which he said affect the stability of the situation in the Palestinian territories.
Shoukry reiterated that the continued expansion of settlement activities and land confiscation by Israeli forces hinder the two-state solution, which is based on establishing a comprehensive and just peace in the region, Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Hafez said.
The foreign minister stressed Egypt’s firm support for the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
He stressed the importance of creating an appropriate atmosphere to relaunch negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides to set up an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Rajoub, for his part, briefed Shoukry on the most critical challenges in the Palestinian territories and the recent wave of violations targeting Al Aqsa Mosque and Islamic and Christian holy sites.
He appreciated the role played by Egypt to achieve national reconciliation in Palestine.
