FM: Recent negotiations with Addis Ababa ‘fruitful’

Foreign Minister Sameh Shokry announced on Saturday that the negotiations on the Renaissance Dam crisis, conducted during his visit to Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Thursday, had proven "fruitful."

Shokry said in a press conference that an understanding on both water issues and the Renaissance Dam have been reached. He added that other sticking points still need to be discussed to reach a compromise that meets the needs of the two countries.

The minister stressed that his negotiations came in the form of a second round of talks after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on the sidelines of the recent African summit.

He pointed out that the two countries plan to cooperate in many areas related to the Nile Basin projects.

"There were some achievements in the first round of talks between Cairo and Addis Ababa, and there is a tendency to hold consultations at the highest level between the foreign ministers to give impetus and momentum to talks. That's why I went to Ethiopia and met with the Ethiopian foreign minister and the Sudanese minister of irrigation," said Shokry.
