FM holds meeting with foreign ambassadors to discuss Palestine recognition

The Secretary General of the Arab League Nabil al-Araby held a meeting on Thursday with ambassadors and representatives of foreign countries to Cairo to discuss the admission of Palestine as a full member state to the UN next September.

The state-run news agency MENA reported that the meeting included ambassadors of Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Norwich, Senegal, Turkey, and South Africa.

The agency quoted an Arab League official as saying the meeting came within the framework of Arab political maneuvers to gain the greatest possible international support for the Palestinian cause, before the UN General Assembly convenes this month.

Araby held a meeting last Saturday with representatives of international organizations, including the African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Non-Aligned Movement for the same reason.

The Arab Peace Initiative committee supported, at its Doha meeting on 14 July, the Palestinian Authority’s decision to request UN recognition of an independent Palestinian State on the1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The committee asked the Secretary General of the Arab League to follow up the situation and mobilize international support.

In the Doha meeting, held on 23 August  and headed by  the Qatari Prime Minister and Foregin Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al-Thani, the committee reiterated its support for Palestinian recognition at the UN.
